About

Preserving the Peggy – A Maritime Treasure of the Isle of Man

Built in 1789, the Peggy of Castletown is the oldest surviving Manx vessel and a rare example of 18th-century boatbuilding. This armed yacht, built for George Quayle, features unique innovations like sliding keels and original cannons — over 95% of her structure is still intact!

After spending over 200 years in her original boathouse, Peggy was carefully moved in 2015 for essential conservation work. Manx National Heritage continues to safeguard her for future generations, ensuring this iconic part of the island’s maritime history lives on.
