The title of this book is taken from a small hill that stands beside the sea shore close to Castletown in the Isle of Man. It was once a place of public execution and it was there that a Manxman, William Christian, was shot on the 2nd January 1663. While this book is concerned with the events that led to his execution, it is not exclusively about the actions of this one man, and of the price he paid. It aims instead to put his death into the context of what had happened over the preceding 70 years.
