Today marks 80 years since the guns fell silent across Europe, bringing an end to years of devastation and conflict. On this day in 1945, millions poured into the streets to celebrate peace, mourn the lives lost, and hold onto hope for a brighter future.
While the end of the war in Europe was declared, the world would wait until 15 August for Japan’s unconditional surrender to bring the Second World War to its official close.
