Photographers and nature lovers are invited to experience the Isle of Man’s natural world like never before at the Manx Natural History Macro Photography Workshop, taking place on Sunday 15 February at the iMuseum in Douglas.
Led by Adam Morgan, Biosphere Photographer in Residence, the workshop reveals how macro photography can transform the tiniest subjects into striking, gallery-worthy images. From butterflies and beetles to bats and shrews, participants will work with carefully selected museum specimens, uncovering incredible details often invisible to the naked eye.
Attendees will gain practical, hands-on experience with key macro photography techniques, including camera settings, lighting, composition, focus stacking and basic editing. Dedicated photography stations and expert guidance throughout ensure a relaxed, creative learning environment, ideal for refining existing skills or trying macro photography for the first time.
The workshop also includes a special introduction by Laura McCoy, Curator of Natural History at Manx National Heritage, who will share the stories behind the specimens and explain the vital role these collections play in understanding and protecting the Isle of Man’s biodiversity.
Laura said: “This workshop is about slowing down and really seeing what’s in front of you. When viewed through a macro lens, even the smallest specimen becomes extraordinary. It’s a remarkable way to connect with the Island’s natural heritage.”
The workshop is hosted by Manx National Heritage in partnership with UNESCO Biosphere Isle of Man and Manx Wildlife Trust, with support from Visit Isle of Man. Designed for adults and young people aged 12+, sessions are available from 9.30am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4.30pm. Tickets cost £25, with optional donations supporting Manx National Heritage’s work. Places are limited and advance booking is essential.
Participants should bring a DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls; a macro lens and tripod are recommended. A limited number of loan kits will be available.
