Next phase of works underway at the Great Laxey Wheel

– Posted on Thursday 29th October 2026

The next phase of conservation and improvement works is set to start at the Great Laxey Wheel, marking another important milestone in the ongoing programme to preserve and enhance one of the Isle of Man’s most iconic heritage attractions.

As part of this phase the former ticket office will be removed, following the recent opening of the new Visitor Welcome Hub and Shop which offers enhanced facilities and provides an improved introduction to the story and significance of the Great Laxey Wheel.

Built in the 1980s, the ticket office has served visitors for more than four decades and welcomed over 1 million people during its lifetime, playing an important role in the visitor experience at the site.

John-Paul Walker, Historic Buildings Architect for Manx National Heritage said:

“We are delighted to continue our investment in the Great Laxey Wheel, building on the significant conservation work already undertaken. With the new Visitor Welcome Hub and Shop, further restoration works progressing and refreshed interpretation planned, Manx National Heritage is creating an even better experience for visitors while ensuring Lady Isabella’s remarkable heritage is preserved and celebrated for generations to come”.

Alongside these developments, significant conservation works have been undertaken in recent years to safeguard the Great Laxey Wheel for future generations. These have included the repointing and repainting of the wheel’s iconic rod duct, the original of which featured an impressive series of 32 arches extending over 169 metres along Glen Mooar Valley.

Over the winter months, Manx National Heritage will also be refreshing the interpretation across the wheel complex, helping visitors to discover more about the site’s fascinating history, historic engineering and significance to the Island’s mining heritage. This work will further enhance the visitor experience and complement the ongoing programme of conservation and improvements.

Together, these projects demonstrate a continued commitment to conserving the Great Laxey Wheel while investing in facilities that enhance the experience for residents and visitors alike.

The Great Laxey Wheel, affectionately known as Lady Isabella, remains one of the Isle of Man’s most recognisable landmarks and an enduring symbol of its rich mining history. The ongoing programme of conservation and improvements will help ensure this remarkable example of Victorian engineering continues to be enjoyed and appreciated for generations to come.
