A major new phase of conservation work at Peel Castle is set to get underway, helping to safeguard one of the Isle of Man’s most iconic heritage sites.

The project will focus on the Barbican wall at the castle entrance, where specialist contractors will repair and protect historic masonry using traditional conservation techniques and locally sourced materials.
Scaffolding will be erected in the area near the castle entrance for the duration of the works, beginning on 28 September 2026, which will also include lime mortar repointing and replacement of weathered sandstone.
This is the next phase of ambitious plans to restore the nearly 1km long curtain wall of the castle, one of the biggest and complex heritage sites on the island.
The £70,000 project has been funded through a ‘capital projects’ loan to Manx National Heritage from Isle of Man Government, demonstrating a shared commitment to protecting the Island’s heritage assets.

“It has been particularly rewarding to champion local expertise throughout the project by working closely with Manx contractors.
“We also want people to experience conservation in action. Visitors will be able to watch the work as it happens, learn more about this phase of the project through our interpretation boards, and join a guided tour.”
