The Isle of Man Victorian Society and Manx National Heritage will host their annual joint lecture this Saturday at 2.30pm in the Manx Museum.
This year’s talk is titled “Annie Swynnerton: Artist, Activist, Pioneer” and will be presented by Rebecca Milner, Curator of Fine Art at Manchester Art Gallery. Rebecca will share the inspiring story of Annie Swynnerton, a groundbreaking painter who challenged expectations in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Dave Martin, Chairman of the Isle of Man Victorian Society and Deputy Chairman of Manx National Heritage said:
“Annie Swynnerton was the first woman ever elected as an Associate Member of the Royal Academy of Arts, a huge achievement at the time. She became well-known for her powerful portraits, imaginative paintings, and her support for women’s rights. Annie also had strong links to the Isle of Man through her husband, the Manx sculptor Joseph Swynnerton, making her story especially meaningful for local audiences.
Whether you’ve heard of Annie Swynnerton or not, you’ll leave with a greater appreciation of her talent, determination, and connection to the Island. Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy an afternoon discovering the life of an extraordinary woman”.
The event takes place at the Manx Museum on Saturday 22 November. Doors open at 2pm for 2.30pm start. Admission is free. Pre-booking not required and donations welcome.
