Filming

Manx National Heritage have a wide variety of  ancient monuments, countryside assets and historic buildings in our care, which provide attractive locations for movie makers, TV programmes, advertisements and for corporate and educational productions.

We are committed to working with production partners to provide locations that set the Isle of Man apart as a desirable destination for filming.  We have close working relationships with a network of organisations involved in promoting the Isle of Man as a filming destination.

We have an excellent track record in working with film-makers to accommodate their requests, whilst ensuring that the buildings and environment are suitably protected and our site visitors are not inconvenienced or their visit compromised by the ongoing filming.

Our permission is needed to film, photograph and broadcast at all of the locations including properties, countryside and ancient monuments in our care, including filming with a drone. Read our drone policy.

Alterations to fixings and fittings within properties can be considered on a case by case basis.  Due to the nature of working with historic properties, not all requests can be approved such as ground penetration and wall fixings.

Examples of some of the many productions that have featured at our sites include:

  • Belle, filmed at Peel Castle – Film set in the 1760’s based on the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle starring Matthew Goode, Emily Watson, Miranda Richardson and Tom Wilkinson.
  • The Knot, filmed at Cregneash – Three part CBBC drama.
  • Stormbreaker, filmed at Cregneash and Castle Rushen – Spy film based on Anthony Horowitz’s novel, staring Alex Pettyfer, Mickey Rourke and Bill Nighy.
  • The Heart of Me, filmed at Niarbyl – Feature film starring Helena Bonham Carter
  • Keeping Mum, filmed at The Sound and Cregneash – Comedy film starring Rowan Atkinson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Maggie Smith and Patrick Swayze.
  • Waking Ned, filmed at Cregneash and Niarbyl – Comedy film by English writer and director Kirk Jones starring Ian Bannen, David Kelly and Fionnula Flanagan.
  • Treasure Island, filmed at Castle Rushen and the Old Grammar School – Adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, directed by Peter Rowe starring Kevin Zegers as Jim Hawkins and Jack Palance as Long John Silver.
  • Schnelle Jelle product advertisement, filmed at Cregneash.

Location fees apply and additional professional fees will apply for any technical, building or other additional work completed. The final price will be dependant on nature of work undertaken.
