The Laxey Miners: The Washing Floors

The ore gathered by the Laxey miners contained a mixture of valuable and worthless minerals, and these needed to be separated out. This process was called “dressing” and took place on the washing floor. Trains unloaded the ore where it would be sorted and processed by teams of workers and machines.

In the 1870s nearly 300 people worked on the washing floors, including women and children.
